Fine Wood Finishing & Staining in Santa Barbara

Doors · Beams · Mantels · Millwork · Garage Doors

Wood finishing is its own craft. We custom-match stains on the actual species, control grain raise and blotching, and build clear coats in thin, sanded layers so the finish is deep and even — protective outside, furniture-grade inside.

What’s included

  • Species identification and custom stain matching on sample boards
  • Stripping or sanding back of failed varnish and UV-damaged finishes
  • Conditioner or washcoat to control blotching on soft grains
  • Hand-applied stain, wiped and blended for even tone
  • Multiple sanded clear coats — marine spar outside, waterborne inside
  • Maintenance guidance so the finish can be refreshed, not redone

Products & materials

Sikkens and marine-grade spar systems for exterior doors and beams, plus waterborne conversion varnishes and hardwax oils for interior millwork.

Our founder spent years as a product specialist for Sherwin-Williams and Dunn-Edwards, so coatings are specified for your substrate and exposure — not for whatever is on the shelf. Meet the owner.

Our fine wood stains & clear coats process

  1. 01

    Sample first

You approve a stain sample on the same wood before we touch the real piece.

  2. 02

    Strip & sand

Old finish is removed to bare wood where needed and sanded through the grits.

  3. 03

    Stain & seal

Stain is applied and wiped by hand, then locked in with a compatible sealer.

  4. 04

    Build clear coats

Coats are sanded between passes for depth, clarity, and a glass-smooth feel.

  5. 05

    Protect

Exterior work gets UV-inhibiting marine systems that can be maintenance-coated later.

Fine Wood Stains & Clear Coats FAQs

Can you restore a sun-damaged front door?

Usually yes. We strip to bare wood, neutralize graying, re-stain to match, and rebuild with UV-inhibiting marine coats.

How often does exterior wood need recoating?

Ocean-facing and south-facing wood typically needs a maintenance coat every 1-3 years, which is far cheaper than a full refinish.

Can you stain to match existing woodwork?

Yes — we build custom stain samples on the same species and get your sign-off before production.
